BolehVPN is one of the virtual private network providers who have a long list of experience in providing internet privacy services in Asia and around the world. In fact, it was formally formed and incorporated in 2007 in Malaysia. The founders of the company have decided to venture into the VPN industry when they found out that their local internet service provider started imposing internet censorship protocols, as well as geo-restrictions and bandwidth throttling. BolehVPN was co-founded by Reuben Yap who is now serving as the Chief Operations Officer of the VPN provider. Pricing & Subscription Plans

Based on what I have seen, BolehVPN has 5 subscription plan options. I can subscribe to aweekly subscription plan, monthly subscription plan, semi-annual subscription plan, annual subscription plan, and the 2-month subscription plan.All of the subscription plans allow me to have a maximum of 3 simultaneous connections at once.The subscription prices are quoted in both the US dollar and Malaysian Ringgit. But since I’m dealing with an international audience, I’ll be quoting the US dollar prices as shown in the price table below.

 On top of that, the VPN provider offers a 1-day free trial option. However, the free option is only applicable to the new users based on their guidelines. I was also shocked to know that I can only test 2-3 servers with the free trial option. This defeats the purpose of actually having a free trial in my opinion.

There is also a money-back guarantee for 14 days form subscription activation. I would just like to remind you that the refund policy only covers the monthly, semi-annually, yearly, and the 2-month subscription plans.

Refunds for cryptocurrency payments will be based on the fiat value of the subscription regardless of the value of the cryptocurrency equivalent at the time of conversion. It will also be levied with a 2% administration charge. I can also pay for any of the 5 subscription plans through debit cards, credit cards, Paypal, Paymentwall, and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Dash, Monero, Zcash, and Zcoin.

Who is it for?

If you want to have anonymous web browsing experience and protect your internet privacy at a maximum level, then getting a VPN service such as BolehVPN is a must. If you want to view the geo-restricted content of video-streaming services, then I advise you to consider installing a VPN system such as BolehVPN. If you want to stay away from the prying eyes of government agencies of countries where surveillance and intelligence gathering are just normal, then you should choose a VPN provider working outside the jurisdictions of these countries.

Ease of Use

In order to pay for a subscription plan, I need to create and register for an account first. I need to type my chosen username, e-mail address, and password in order to create an account. Once the account is registered, I need to log-in and go to “My Dashboard”. Then I need to scroll down a little bit so that I can view the “Make an Order” section and the “Order History” section.  From there, I can manage my subscription and pay accordingly.

I also need to be logged in to the account in order to download the desktop client version of BolehVPN. It took me 19 seconds to download the installer file for the Windows OS. BolehVPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux computer operating systems. The VPN platform also works on Android mobile devices. It works with routers such as Tomato, DD-WRT, and AsusMerlin-WRT as well.

The bad news is that there has been an issue during the actual installation of the installer file on my local computer running on Windows OS. However, there is no need to worry as I was able to successfully install the VPN system after restarting my computer. The size of the Graphic User Interface (GUI) of BolehVPN is too small. Because of that, the VPN platform is quite hard to operate and maneuver based on my experience.

Once I’m logged in to my account using the desktop client version of BolehVPN, I can manually adjust the settings such as the following:

• Hide on successful connection (Enable or Disable)
• Connect to boot (Enable or Disable)
• No Sound (Enable or Disable)
• Enable lockdown (Enable or Disable)
• Run at system startup (Enable or Disable)
• Auto reconnect (Enable or Disable)
• Enable DNS leak protection (Enable or Disable)
• Update configuration (Every startup, daily, weekly, monthly, or never)

Speed & Server Locations

Based on what I have seen and what I have observed, BolehVPN has a limited number of servers and a limited number of countries you can connect to. BolehVPN has only 35 VPN servers across 12 countries worldwide. The VPN also claims to be implementing an unlimited bandwidth system. While this is the current situation, I have not prejudged the system and still conducted an actual server speed test below.

Security & Privacy

I can hide my internet browsing activities and my real location whenever I connect to BolehVPN. While the size of the graphic user interface is too small, it does not prevent me from being safe online. My internet privacy and data security are still established with the use of the VPN service. All I have to do is to select a VPN server from the drop-down menu list in the desktop client version of BolehVPN. After selecting a VPN server, I just clicked the green button with a shield icon at the right corner beside the drop-down menu option. It is the “Connect” button of the VPN platform.  

I can select whether to use OpenVPN or the L2TP VPN protocol from the drop-down menu of the desktop client version. Alternatively, I can also select HTTP proxy and the SOCKS Proxy. Currently speaking, BolehVPN uses a 256-bit AES encryption so that all the internet traffic and all the files uploaded and downloaded through the internet are kept safe all the time. Aside from that, this best VPN service provider uses a perfect forward secrecy mechanism. Another thing that you should know is that BolehVPN implements an SHA-2 hashing algorithm as one of its safety measures. On top of that, BolehVPN has a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) with 4096-bit keys to add protection to the VPN system.

As of the moment, BolehVPN implements a zero-logging policy. However, you should know that the VPN system analyzes the amount of bandwidth of the internet that was used and the number of connections used. 

BolehVPN also has a public Wi-Fi protection system. The VPN provider also has a warrant canary that will indirectly tell users of the VPN system just like me if the company has been served with subpoenas without defying a gag order.

Streaming

I had a nice experience video streaming shows on Netflix US using BolehVPN. In less than 4 seconds, the selected video played efficiently without any video buffering. I have not experienced a technical issue while streaming Netflix US. This is the case when I selected the Surfing/Streaming – US VPN server. It was able to bypass geo-restrictions and fool the VPN blockers and DPI firewalls. The server speed is good enough to stream videos without any delay.

However, I would like to remind you to never use the BolehFlix-US VPN server as this can be detected and blocked by Netflix US VPN blocker. It is also safe to assume that other video streaming services such as Hulu can be bypassed as well.

Online Support

BolehVPN has good online customer support because it has user guides as well as a compilation of the frequently asked questions (FAQs). The VPN provider also has a forum page wherein users can discuss freely about the VPN service. There is also a “Submit a Request” section wherein I can send my concerns to the technical staff of BolehVPN. There is also a chat support system that I can usebut it only works during business hours. I can also contact e-mail support at support@bolehvpn.net. Additional Features

BolehVPN has an Internet Kill Switch as well as the Server Obfuscation technology.

Internet Kill Switch

Through the settings of the desktop client version of BolehVPN, I can activate the Internet Kill Switch feature. Once I checked the box indicating “Enable lockdown” the Internet Kill Switch becomes active. Based on my experience, it works efficiently and blocks internet access if the VPN connection is dropped unintentionally. I can’t access the internet if I’m not connected to one of the VPN servers while the Internet Kill Switch is active. Unencrypted internet access is therefore blocked.

Server Obfuscation Technology

BolehVPN has a server obfuscation technology which allows me to bypass geo-restrictions, internet censorship as well as defeat VPN blockers and DPI firewalls. This feature is helpful in order for me to access video streaming services with geo-restricted content. I have used this feature when watching Netflix US.

Conclusion

I can hide my internet browsing activities and my real location whenever I connect to BolehVPN. This is because my original I.P. address is masked by replacing the original with a false I.P. address to spoof my location. On top of that, I can encrypt my internet connection using 256-bit AES encryption. Through server obfuscation, I can also bypass geo-restrictions and fool the VPN blockers and DPI firewalls. Because of that, I had a nice experience video streaming shows on Netflix US.

The size of the Graphic User Interface (GUI) of BolehVPN is too small. Because of that, the VPN platform is quite hard to operate and maneuver based on my experience. It has a limited number of servers and limited server locations. The average speed of the VPN servers of BolehVPN is also slower than most competitors according to the speed tests I conducted. I can only have 3 simultaneous connections which are quite limited. Additional features are also limited. Subscription prices are actually high when dealing with a cost-benefit analysis for using the VPN system. I suggest you find a better VPN service provider as an alternative.
